Elle was born on May 26, 2010. I’ll spare you the details, but I will say that I was totally unprepared for the actual labour part. I’m not sure if I wasn’t paying attention in my baby classes, or just blocking it out, but I didn’t realize that the labour process could take DAYS to happen. That stuff just doesn’t happen in the movies.
It’s a lot to take in when someone hands you a baby and tells you it’s yours. To this day it still boggles my mind – so much to process and wrap your mind around. We made this baby? She is our responsibility for the next 20 years?
My first shock was that it was a girl, not a boy as I had expected. I didn’t have a preference either way, but so many elderly Chinese ladies told me with absolute certainty it was a boy, they had me convinced. This threw me for a loop, because everyone told me a mother’s instinct is always correct.
I know for my husband, it was love at first sight. The moment he picked her up, he was instantly smitten. It took a little longer for me, but she grows on me more and more each day.
